Ann Lewis
Local artist and printmaker Ann Lewis creates stunning artwork inspired by various aspects of the Welsh landscape.
Ann originally trained as a graphic designer and illustrator. In time, fine art finally overtook from her illustration work. And she’s now a full-time artist printmaker based in the Conwy Valley. Whilst she creates a variety of works in different styles and media, Ann’s real passion is linocut.
Creating a new linocut can involve lots of looking, sketching and pottering as inspiration builds. It can take a long time to perfect a design. And during this time, there’s a steady process to creating a new image. Sketching, photography and more sketches before the final design is drawn onto lino and then steadily cut out. It can take over a month to create a new edition. In addition, each image is then produced as a limited run, with each print meticulously created by hand.
Inspired by nature
Many of Ann’s landscape linocuts have a focal point of a waterfall, river or coastline. And her use of natural, soft colours and clean, blocky lines and shapes creates evocative, beautiful pieces of work. The delicate and detailed linocuts of birds, wildlife, plants and flowers look so true to life. And if you are a cat lover, a lovely gallery of gorgeous cats will most likely, make you smile.
I love Ann’s work and follow her new projects as she updates her Facebook page with great interest. North Wales born and bred, Ann loves her job and takes great pride in taking her Welsh message out to a wider audience.
On show
Locally, her work is currently on view at the Tegfryn Gallery, Menai Bridge, Anglesey, the Royal Cambrian Academy in Conwy, and Galeri in Betws y Coed. Limited edition linocuts available from www.annlewis.co.uk.
